"Ping" can be useful to troubleshoot network connectivity quickly. Ping will let you send a request to a server to say "Please reply" and the server will send you a sort of "Hello." Think Ping > Pong.

  1. In Windows Vista, it is much the same as previous Windows OSes. From a run command you can type "CMD".

  1. In the command prompt that opens, type "ping acme-hosting.net" or ping whatever server you wish.

You will either receive a reply, no reply, or some variation.
